Yogi Spine Care and Physical Therapy
Growing up, Dr. Sam Koshiya accompanied his mother to doctor appointments aimed at treating her frequent back pain. Even though the doctor visits continued, Koshiya saw that her pain never really went away from the root cause.
He made it his mission to get to the root cause of pain. For the last nine plus years, Koshiya, a licensed physical therapist who has myriad certifications, has helped patients “get better quicker” without medications, injections or surgeries.
In June 2022, Koshiya, and his partner, Dr. Pinal Patel, opened Yogi Spine Care and Physical Therapy in Falls Township. The business members, who both hail from Bucks County, specialize in treating a variety of conditions, including back, neck and all other joint pain or dysfunction, chronic pain, as well as rehabilitation for sports and athletic injuries, concussion, vestibular and neuro-rehab pre- and post-surgery, and motor vehicle accident injury recovery, and more.
“Our goal is to treat individuals without medicine, injection or surgery,” Koshiya said, adding that oftentimes pain medications and injections are ineffective in the 100 percent healing process. “It’s not solving the problem source. It’s solving the symptoms.”
Instead Koshiya and Patel work to identify and fix the root cause, body mechanics – such as poor posture – which tend to lead to problems if not addressed.
“We try to make you more flexible, more mobile and provide you with more self-confidence in your physical well-being,” Koshiya said. “We let patients know what they can do to prevent pain in the future so they can enjoy activities they love to do.”
Yogi Spine Care and Physical Therapy believes in educating and empowering not only patients, but anyone interested in learning more about pain and holistic ways to prevent it. The center offers no-cost seminars and provides free expert guidance packets, such as the back pain report/e-book, to anyone who requests it. In addition, the center plans to offer monthly yoga classes.
While chiropractors relieve pain by properly aligning the spine and joints, physical therapists then take treatment a step further.
“After everything is fixed you need to strengthen the structure, so you can stay fit and pain free,” Koshiya said.
Of the more than 200,000 physical therapists currently practicing, fewer than 5 percent have certification in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. Dr. Koshiya and Patel are among the only physical therapists locally who are certified in this evidence-based assessment and management protocol. The McKenzie Method is used to treat patients with spinal and extremity problems. The Method promotes patient empowerment and incorporates postural advice, individualized exercises and prevents re-occurrence.
The practice also employs LSVT BIG, a clinically proven specialized treatment approach. According to Patel, LSVT BIG has been shown to help patients with Parkinson’s Disease and any other neurological conditions (such as Multiple Sclerosis) to walk better with improved balance and maintain their physical functions and activities.
Koshiya is so passionate about physical therapy that he advises prospective patients on how to choose a physical therapist – even if it is not him. The most important indication of a quality physical therapist is the time that the clinician spends with each patient.
“How much time do you get?” Koshiya asked, adding that he and Patel spend 45 minutes to an hour providing one-on-one patient care. “I need to make sure what I’m doing is great for the person.”
Yogi Spine and Physical Therapy is so confident in the care its practitioners provide that Koshiya and Patel, for a limited time, are offering a no-cost “Find out what’s wrong visit?” The appointment is meant to analyze the patient’s problems/condition and devise an education plan.
“Health is wealth, and our goal is to bring your physical health back,” he said. “We just don’t want you to go for surgery.”
