Goldey Plumbing
From holding the flashlight for their father, Robert Goldey Sr., to working alongside him as plumbing apprentices and undertaking years of formal training to excel in their trade as master plumbers, Robert Jr., Mike, Bill, and Joe Goldey found their calling early on.
“That’s all I know,” Mike Goldey said of the trade he and his brothers have been working in professionally for several decades. “We all knew at a young age that we wanted to be plumbers. We all went to the tech school for plumbing during the day and worked with dad on weekends. The day after we graduated high school, we became full-time plumbers.”
Together, the brothers, along with their mother, Mary – who serves as CEO of Levittown-based Goldey Plumbing – with help from the third generation of Goldey plumbers, Scott, Gant, Joe Jr., Kevin, and Mike Jr., work hard to exponentially grow the elder Goldey’s plumbing business that he started in 1973.
“He had zero customers. He built it from the ground up,” Mike Goldey said, adding that his late father provided excellent service, which resulted in countless repeat customers. “We still service his customers. Their children and grandchildren are buying homes in the Levittown area.”
For nearly 50 years Goldey Plumbing has provided a wide range of plumbing services, including repairs, full-service drain cleaning, unclogging sewers, water heater installations, toilet, kitchen sink and faucet installations, tub and shower valve installs and bathroom remodeling to residential and light commercial customers in lower Bucks County, as well as portions of eastern Montgomery County and central New Jersey. In more recent years, the company has begun offering sewer lateral inspections with a camera, which are typically performed as part of a real estate transaction.
Back when their father was getting started – before cell phones were commonplace – Mr. Goldey would set out for a job and phone his wife from a pay phone to see if any other calls for service had come in. If they had, Mary would provide the address and what the customer needed. The tireless founder worked around the clock, on holidays and special occasions, to provide emergency service to what soon became a growing customer base.
“Since day one she’s been doing everything behind the scenes,” Mike said of their mother, who is almost 80 years old. “My mom is the centerpiece of our business. She’s in it daily.”
The Goldey brothers, and now, with their sons and nephews, have inherited their parents’ work ethic. On Christmas day when Mike was 13 or 14, he and his brothers were opening presents when the phone on his father’s desk rang. Without missing a beat, his father quickly got dressed and left to handle a blocked sewer.
“I got dressed and went with him,” Mike said. “If that phone rang and a customer had an issue, you go and take care of that. We do miss certain milestones.”
Fast forward to 2020 and the Goldey family took a tremendous step forward with the purchase of a building in Falls Township to house their equipment and serve as a shop area.
“That is something my dad probably would have never envisioned,” Mike said. “He was just a small, one-man band with an office in our house.”
But, as the next generation of Goldey plumbers are coming up behind them, the brothers and their mom agreed that it was time to expand. The family settled on the property in April 2020 – at a time when things were uncertain given the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the family business came out of the pandemic undeterred.
“Once the pandemic hit, for about a week, the phone was a little quiet,” he said. More time at home, coupled with limited access to toilet paper resulted in customers flushing items that resulted in the need for more plumbing services. “It just rang off the hook and it hasn’t stopped. Our business got very busy when people started staying home for months on end. It has not stopped.”
Like their father, the Goldey brothers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“There’s always someone on call,” he said. “Someone always has their phone on them and is able to perform a service call on an emergency basis. We pride ourselves on customer service. We treat a customer’s home like our own. It’s just the pride we have. Our name is our livelihood.”
